Lawal Haruna, a resident of Fantua in Katsina, President Muhammadu Buhari's home state, told Reuters on the phone about the incident.
Gunmen arrived at Maigamji Masjid on motorbikes and started firing. Around 12 people attending night prayers were hit by gunfire and killed, including the chief imam, Haruna said.
Haruna narrated the incident that they later kidnapped many people and took them away.
